Like many other countries in the region, the UAE has thriving craft traditions, particularly in terms of ceramics and the use of materials. Michael Rice is part of its re-emergence today, with a contemporary and modern approach that is showcased in his solo exhibition “GEO- Earth and its Materiality” at 1971 – Design Space. This talk brings together Michael Rice, Ivan Parati and Nader Gammas in a conversation on the use of materiality in design during Art Week.
About Michael Rice
Michael has a Degree in Fine Craft Design, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Art and Design), and a Masters Degree in Multi Disciplinary Design, all from the University of Ulster. His work is exhibited internationally. As an educator he has taught in schools, colleges, universities and art centres worldwide and has undertaken artist residencies in the UK, Pakistan, Sri Lanka Dubai and Bali. Whilst living in Ireland Michael was a recipient of the Arts Council of N. Ireland Individual Artist Award in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. He relocated to Dubai in 2010. He is the International Academy of Ceramics UNESCO representative for the UAE and exhibited his work as a finalist in the Taiwan Ceramic Biennale at the Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taipei, World Design Capital 2016. He was recently announced as a finalist for the Korean Ceramic Biennale 2019. Michael is an Associate Professor of Studio Art at the American University in Dubai.
About Ivan Parati
Ivan Parati is an industrial designer with experience in product, furniture, interior, graphics and interaction. He is currently teaching at Ajman University, focusing his research on modularity, geometric tessellation and digital fabrication, keen on technology but aware of its potential threat to contemporary society. Ivan and his wife Emanuela Corti founded Caravan, a design collective dialoguing among the local industry and the creative community with workshops, installations, exhibitions, and researches. He is also one of the founders of Witsense. Ivan recently joined Compasses as Associate Editor for the Middle East , the architecture and design magazine with international vocation focusing on the Gulf sceneg. Since 2018 Dubai Design Week he is a board member of UAE Modern.
About Nader Gammas
American born Nader Gammas holds a B.Sc. in Architecture from the University of Jordan, and a MFA in Lighting Design from Parsons School of Design in New York. He currently lives in Dubai and works between Dubai and New York. Nader setup his studio with an interest in illuminating built environments.
